The power of celebrating: finding clarity and energy in wins, setbacks, and practising self-compassion
When was the last time you truly celebrated yourself?
Not just the big, Instagram-worthy moments but the tiny, quiet wins that often slip by unnoticed.
And what about the moments that felt like setbacks?
Did you know they can also be a source of clarity and renewed energy when met with self-compassion?
In my work as a coach, I see it all the time: talented, driven people pushing forward, chasing the next goal, forgetting to pause. We downplay our progress. We brush off our achievements. We beat ourselves up when things don’t go as planned.Yet it’s in the pausing, celebrating, and gentle self-reflection that the real growth happens.
Let’s explore how you can start celebrating your whole journey; the wins, the setbacks, and the messy middle so you can gain the clarity and energy you need to keep moving forward.
Celebrate small wins: fuel for momentum
Our brains thrive on progress. When you acknowledge small wins, no matter how tiny, you’re telling yourself, “I’m moving forward.”
This sense of progress is incredibly motivating. Think about the last time you finished a difficult task you’d been putting off. When you said no when you needed to. When you asked for help or held a boundary that felt uncomfortable but necessary.
These moments matter.
Micro-celebrations build confidence and resilience. Try jotting your small wins down in a notebook, or keep a ‘Wins Jar’ where you drop in a note each time you acknowledge a step forward.
Honour big achievements: acknowledge how far you’ve come
It can feel surprisingly vulnerable to celebrate big milestones. But when you fully acknowledge your bigger successes, you reinforce the belief that your efforts are paying off. You create an inner sense of pride and trust in yourself.
When did you last truly celebrate a big milestone?
What did you do to mark it?
Whether it’s landing a new job, finishing a big project, or reaching a personal goal, ask yourself: “How can I honour this moment in a way that feels meaningful to me?”
Celebrate the learning in setbacks
Setbacks can sting, but they’re often where the richest learning lives. Instead of rushing past them or beating yourself up, pause and reflect: What is this teaching me? Maybe an opportunity didn’t work out because it wasn’t aligned with your values. Maybe a ‘failure’ revealed a strength you hadn’t seen before, your courage, your adaptability.
Reframing setbacks as ‘data points’ helps you extract clarity.
What worked? What didn’t? What will you do differently next time?
This reflection transforms disappointment into direction.
💛 The Power of Self-Compassion
There’s a common fear that being kind to ourselves makes us lazy.
In truth, self-compassion is an incredible energy-giver.
Think of how you’d talk to a friend after a setback, you’d remind them of their strengths, hold space for their feelings, and encourage them to keep going. You deserve that same kindness.
Try the Kind Friend Technique: when you catch yourself in harsh self-talk, pause and ask, “What would I say to a dear friend in this exact situation?” Then say that to yourself.
Gaining clarity and energy from both
Celebration is not about ignoring reality or pretending everything is perfect. It’s about making space for reflection.
It’s about noticing your progress, owning your growth, and staying gentle with yourself in the moments that feel hard.
A simple cycle you can try:
Celebrate, big or small.
Reflect, what did this teach you?
Reset, how does this shape your next step?
This practice helps you build resilience, clarity, and a sense of forward momentum, without burning out or being stuck in self-criticism.
A Gentle Invitation for You
Today, I invite you to pause. Celebrate something small, maybe you got out of bed when you didn’t feel like it. Maybe you asked for what you needed. Maybe you made a mistake and forgave yourself.
Write it down. Say it out loud. Smile about it. And if you’re sitting with a setback right now, be gentle. Reflect on what it’s telling you. Offer yourself the same compassion you would a friend.
Growth lives in these moments.
If you’d like support in celebrating your whole journey: the wins, the lessons, and the beautiful in-betweens, I’m here.
This is the heart of the work I do as a coach✨
You deserve to feel proud of how far you’ve come, clear about where you’re going, and kind to yourself every step of the way.
